dc, again
reviews
- sun 1/12/2003 - talk to her at bethesda row cinema. i expected
something as slow and boring as 'all about my mother', but this was
pleasantly twisted, with a plot. as before, however, the creepy part isn't
the weirdo's behavior, but how everyone reacts to the weirdo with
open, friendly obliviousness. 6.

- saving tony danza at dcac. 6.
- dingleberries at warehouse next door by cherry red. 4.
- what dogs do at the national conservatory for the dramatic arts. 7.
- wed 1/1/2003 - personal velocity at bethesda row cinema. the
first part was too womynist by far. battered things should be fried and
served with marinara sauce, rather than be subjects of movies. but the
rest of it was much more universal - first about the high expectations of
success that parents have for their children, then about being confused by
death, with a nice creepy twisty ending. overuse of grainy images,
though. 7.
- thur 12/26 - gone home, at manhattan theatre club. i was at first put
off by how classy this production was, but i was pleasantly
surprised. sufficient creepiness to identify with, especially when any of
the female characters expressed positive or caring emotions. 7.
- thur 12/19 - the way home, at outer circle. all the slowness
characteristic of a korean movie, without the redeeming emotional twang
at the end. at least i got to explore tenleytown, which i'd never been in
before. 4.
- sun 12/15 - la quitapena at umd. at first, the
ethnomusicology
department's contribution made me wary, as did the play's being dedicated
to the memory of a professor who graded too many undergraduate exams,
tried to drive home for the holidays on no sleep, and died in a car
accident. but mariu carrera's body is neat, and she makes a convincing
angel of death whether the angel was created from a squashed ant, a
run-over waiter from a tango pub, or a cigar-smoking hippie. and giving
the audience eggs full of rice to shake for noisy participation wasn't
such a bad idea after all. 8.
- thur 12/12 - sketchup at umd. high energy as always. the best part
was their imitation of an erasable inc skit which results in a cast
member drowning. 7.
- tue 12/10 - talking with your mouth full storytelling at hr-57. i
still wonder whether they ever found the right scroll, and whether the
king's plan for universal happiness got put in place. 6.
- sat 12/8 - king lear's daughters at umd. they had a wonderful fool,
which is
enough to make any play. also, much less feminism then i expected. and the
random poetically vague language was surprisingly painless. still,
not much to relate to or be moved by. 7.
- thu 12/05 - el crimen del padre amaro, at dupont inner circle. the
priest, the old crone, the drug lord, the peasant, the feisty liberal, and
other pieces of the latin american myth were each beatifully done,
but i kept expecting them to be woven together into one cohesive fairy
tale, and i was disappointed. 6.
- sat 11/30 - treasure planet, at lowes centerpark. i liked treasure
island to begin with, and disney actually added parts that made the story
make more sense, rather than adding contrived randomness. in fact, the
whole father-son relationship makes so much sense, i'm going to have to
reread the book and see whether it was actually there. 8.
- sat 11/23 - peter and the wolf, by puppet co, at glen echo.
it's for kids. 2.
- fri 11/22 - sex workers art show. this is what the supreme court was
talking about when they said "no redeeming social value". although i
probably shouldn't judge as i left in the middle of it. 1.
- wed 11/20 - central do brasil at avw. reality twisted by writing,
expecting, remembering...but with much warmth. 10.
